From Founder & Principal Peter Quin:

“The school is set on the grounds of the stunning Scotney Castle Estate. Originally, the buildings and workshop were part of the National Trust’s Estate, later becoming a training centre for the tree surgeons.

In the 1980s the buildings fell into disrepair but rather than an end, this was to mark a new chapter. When I first walked in, I was inspired by the light in the space. I had a vision for the type of school I wanted to create. Bringing together my experience as a Furniture-Maker and teacher, I wanted to to cultivate the next generation of designer-makers by providing them with the skills to craft fine furniture and the business acumen to sustain their workshops.”

A Place for All Aspirations

The Furniture Craft School welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and with varying aspirations. Some arrive with a well-defined vision, ready to embark on a journey of craftsmanship. Others discover their path along the way, finding satisfcaction in the tactile experience of working with wood and the fulfilment that comes from bringing an idea to life through their hands.

The school's ethos revolves around the joy of learning, regardless of one's stage in life. It's a place where curiosity is nurtured, and skills are honed through practice and perseverance. The environment fosters a sense of focus and fellowship, encouraging students to solve problems creatively and develop their craft using time-honoured techniques.

What is it like?

Our school is a supportive community built around a shared love of woodcraft. Students form strong bonds, working together and encouraging each other throughout their time here. As the seasons change, we come together to share stories, meals, and laughter, often around the fire, creating lasting memories along the way.

We specialise in teaching traditional techniques for fine furniture-making and are proud to be one of the few independent schools offering City & Guilds diplomas. Our term-time schedule allows you to consolidate your learning during breaks, ensuring a balanced approach to your studies. Students can explore our extensive library and try out a range of hand tools. We encourage one-on-one chats with tutors to help each student discover and pursue the best path for their future.

Throughout the year, the school organises educational visits that offer students unique insights into the furniture-making world. Thanks to Peter’s strong industry connections, students gain insider access to professional workshops, businesses, and suppliers, as well as opportunities to visit museums, fairs, and exhibitions.

Flexible Learning Paths

Offering one-year and two-year courses in furniture making, the school also accommodates students seeking shorter commitments, with options for one-term or half-year programs. This flexibility ensures that the school can cater to a wide range of learners, from hobbyists to aspiring professionals, all united by their passion for woodworking.

Our location

The furniture school is set on the beautiful estate of Scotney Castle. The gardens, castle, and house are a short walk from the Workshop. For more information on Scotney Castle, see The National Trust's website.

The Workshop itself is housed in refurbished woodland estate buildings, comprising two purpose-designed, furniture-making and machine woodworking areas.

Adjoining the Workshops, the school has its own timber yard, and promotes the conversion, drying, and use of local and sustainable hardwoods.
