From Founder & Principal Peter Quin:

“The school is set on the grounds of the stunning Scotney Castle Estate. Originally, the buildings and workshop were part of the National Trust’s Estate, later becoming a training centre for the tree surgeons.

In the 1980s the buildings fell into disrepair as those activities ceased. When I first walked in, I was inspired by the light in the space. I had a vision for the type of school I wanted to create. Bringing together my experience as a Furniture-Maker and teacher, I wanted to help aspiring designer-makers to learn the skills to make Fine Furniture and run their own workshops.”

Who is it for?

People come to Furniture Craft School for all sorts of reasons. Some have a concrete vision when joining. For others, the path becomes clearer throughout the year. Some simply seek the joy of working with wood and the satisfaction of making something from scratch, from their own creativity and with their own hands.

Learning something new, no matter what stage of life you’re in, is a wonderful experience. Our school draws students from all walks of life.

The environment is one of curiosity, focus and fellowship. Students are encouraged to learn by making and creatively develop problem-solving skills based on traditional methods.

What is it like?

Our school is a supportive community built around a shared love of woodcraft. Students form strong bonds, working together and encouraging each other throughout their time here. As the seasons change, we come together to share stories, meals, and laughter, often around the fire, creating lasting memories along the way.

We specialise in teaching traditional techniques for fine furniture-making and are proud to be one of the few independent schools offering City & Guilds diplomas. Our term-time schedule allows you to consolidate your learning during breaks, ensuring a balanced approach to your studies. Students can explore our extensive library and try out a range of hand tools. We encourage one-on-one chats with tutors to help each student discover and pursue the best path for their future.

Throughout the year, the school organizes educational visits that offer students unique insights into the furniture-making world. Thanks to Peter’s strong industry connections, students gain insider access to professional workshops, businesses, and suppliers, as well as opportunities to visit museums, fairs, and exhibitions.

Our location

The furniture school is set on the beautiful estate of Scotney Castle. The gardens, castle, and house are a short walk from the Workshop. For more information on Scotney Castle, see The National Trust's website.

The Workshop itself is housed in refurbished woodland estate buildings, comprising two purpose-designed, furniture-making and machine woodworking areas.

Adjoining the Workshops, the school has its own timber yard, and promotes the conversion, drying, and use of local and sustainable hardwoods.
